Why is he bandaged up? Why is he wearing a purple jacket over his shoulders? Why does he have an eyepatch? Though the game is hesitant to tell you, what you gather is that as Justice was conducting a trial regarding a bombing, and a bomb that was being used as a visual aid was purposefully set off, resulting in the entire courtroom being bombed, and a detective dying. Though the game begins with Cykes’s inner monologue, when Justice appears on the screen, you have a bunch of questions. The first thing you’ll notice is Justice. And these are only some of the highlights. With the sound taking an orchestral approach, songs such as Justice’s objection theme, the “Announce The Truth” theme, and the pursuit theme all sound amazing. Sound - “Dual Destinies” soundtrack is honestly one of the best in the series. Second, Cykes's ability, Mood Matrix, allows the player to analyze the emotions of witnesses on the stand and pick out which statements cause which reactions and see if there is any conflict of interest within them. Capcom includes hints on what to search or who to talk to next, as well as indicators to tell you what pieces of information need to be looked at in each room. Cykes is able to read and analyze human emotions with the combination of her AI technology and her heightened hearing ability. Much like the other two protagonists, Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice, Cykes also has a special ability. With the technology left behind by her robotic engineer mother, she works at the “Wright Anything Agency” under the tutelage of “Ace Attorney” Phoenix Wright.
Athena Cykes is an eighteen year old lawyer with a specialization in analytical psychology. “Dual Destinies” does introduce us to a new protagonist however.

I’m not entirely sure why they would do that in the first place - maybe they felt like it would drive away fans of the series if they continued on with the “Apollo Justice” world they had going on, but anyone's guess is as good as mine. This means no Ema Skye, no Jurist System, no Kristoph Gavin, no mention of Trucy Wright’s family, nothing! And speaking of Trucy Wright, she was an essential character in “Apollo Justice,” and in this game? She’s been reduced to a side character! She is involved in absolutely NOTHING until the case 5, and even then it’s only for a small role. All that character and world building for nothing. First off, remember how I explained in my “Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney” review that the entire series had been soft rebooted? Well, they retconned the soft reboot. With that out of the way, I’d figure I'd start with some of my general criticisms of the game. Though it isn’t overly excessive, I see why the rating was necessary. Though this game isn’t particularly different in terms of language or violence, there are more graphic images in this game, specifically, blood.

Also, this is the first (and most likely last) time that an Ace Attorney game has gotten a “Mature” Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating. “Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies," finally released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, was the first time the series had gone 3-D, featuring all new characters, sprites, animations, voice acting, and fully animated cutscenes - a huge leap from the 2-D graphics of the previous generation of handheld consoles. This means that from the time period of 2007 to 2013, there was no main series Ace Attorney game. “Ace Attorney: Investigations,” a spin-off of the series, was released in 2009, and due to its poor sales, its sequel “Ace Attorney Investigations 2,” was cancelled internationally. So, with “Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney” said and done, Ace Attorney fans outside of Japan had to wait a while before a new main series game was released.
